I remember very prominently the whole atmosphere and spirit of Chinese New Year in Penang back when I was younger. It was a very obvious feel of celebration, it felt like a new year.
It's rather unfortunate the way culture has changed. A very generic statement, but I'm sure we're all feeling it. Don't you think holiday spirits are starting to dampen way too fast? The only thing getting better is the lights and decorations. Holiday aesthetic on point.
Trust mankind to leave it all up to technology development in planting an idea that everything is the way it should be. I don't really mind it though. Shoot me.
However, the presence of family and the memories held in Penang itself will always stamp the scent of Chinese New Year to me.
My family and I left our home at around 6 p.m on Wednesday evening and reached Penang shortly after 11.30 p.m. There was no bumper-to-bumper jam but the slight showers made the heavy traffic even slower. Upon driving into Georgetown, we headed straight to Beratur Nasi Kandar. Heaven. I repeat, HEAVEN. Devoured it in mygrandaunt's place where we stayed for the night before checking into our hotel the following day. Before calling it a night, my uncle brought Keith and I along to Straights Quay and we had a drink each at Healy Mac's Irish Bar and Restaurant while he hung out with some friends.
I had a lychee cocktail!! A mix of vodka, lychee liquor and something else. I WAS SO SLEEPY AFTER. ALCOHOL AND I HAVE NO BOND??
The next day was very relaxed. As usual, we only visited one house during CNY at about 3pm. Prior to that, it's merely waking up late and eating. Pretty perfect huh? I still haven't had pineapple tarts and I'm leaving tomorrow :( I'm really sad :( Spent the rest of the day editing videos because GUESS WHO'S DECIDED TO TRY A HAND AT VLOGGING (minus the whole talking in the video part)?? I'm pretty set on trying new things to be occupied with as a hobby along the lines of broadcast journalism; hence the blog and videos. Feeling excited, hope I keep this up..
Today consists of just kicking back until a party tonight. I brought my math books to Penang with me but I'm not feeling the whole college algebra vibe or the whole edit-my-English-essay vibe either. I feel content with the thought of cramming it all in on Sunday though! God bless my soul.
